Searing Tips To Improve Search Engine Ranking

April 27, 2009 by: sear1ng

Search engine ranking for websites, blogs, articles and media can change overnight. A website may rank the highest today and disappear tomorrow. Why does this happen and what can be done about it?
First what is search engine ranking? It is the where you appear in the search results for specific search terms. You’re search engine ranking also relates to your page rank that you get from Google for your website. When you first start out you’ll have no ranking at all.

If you submit your site correctly to the search engines you will usually receive a page rank of PR0 translated as ‘page rank zero’ and shown as 0/10 which is the lowest ranking. The highest being PR10 is equal to 10/10. An acceptable PR would be 3/10 or higher and few websites are above 8/10. Google itself ranks 8/10 and you can install google’s toolbar in your internet explorer or firefox browser to check this out. Show Google.com in your browser and look at the toolbar you installed. There is a little bar showing some green with a small bit of white. Roll your mouse over it or click the arrow next to it and you will see Google’s page rank.

If you are in a broad niche the search engine ranking of your landing page(s) is likely to change regularly regardless of your PR ranking given. Sites that don’t have a high PR can still have a search engine ranking that puts them on the first page for certain phrases and keywords. This is determined by a combination of keywords, the usefulness of the content and what you and your competition are doing. Of course it also depends on the search that is being carried out. Keywords are really searches by people looking for a solution or product. It is well known amongst internet businesses that around 40% of the searches made are brand new phrases or keywords that have never been used before. If your keywords, content or product are only loosely related you may not be providing an effective solution. If you have achieved a high search engine ranking with this method your site is very likely to lose its position. The purpose of using specific keywords enables you to target the market you need to reach. It would be difficult for example to compete in the broad niche ‘shoes’ but if you have a specific brand of in demand ‘tap dancing shoes’ within a niche market that is low in competition what would your keywords be?

Choosing an untapped niche isn’t quite as easy as it used to be but if you do your keyword research diligently you’ll find that you can receive a good enough search engine ranking and have a profitable site even before you are given a page rank.

The best way to deal with this ever changing concept is to go for a narrow niche and highly target your visitors so that they can see you are solving their problem. Choose keywords that will put your site in front of the people you want to visit your site and use all of the marketing methods to achieve a good search engine ranking. Ensure your content is useful to the visitor, that your keywords are used appropriately and not seen to be overused and classed as spam.

You don’t have to be on the first page or highly ranked to have a profitable site. People are often searching for something new when they are using search engines. So, your site will very likely get visitors even if it is on page 2 or 3. It is all about getting a piece of the niche as opposed to cornering the niche.

And lastly, use every legitimate way to market your business as not even the top gurus know how Google decides on page rank and search engine ranking. Learning them and putting them into action is the way to grow your online presence and put what you have in front of the right people. It is totally within the realms of possibility to have a profitable business in a small niche even with a low search engine ranking.

Hopefully you’re all working at improving your search engine ranking and internet exposure. I’ve just returned from a family break and am constantly reviewing internet exposure and the way that business is done on the internet. I’ve noticed that many students give up with search engine ranking techniques if they find it too hard or they aren’t willing to give it the time. One of the main things I’ve noticed is that people often believe that their business is going to provide overnight riches. While it is possible to make an awful lot of money it does depend on how you do it. This current world finance crisis has been affecting all sorts of business but some businesses are doing very well. The key to it is that the internet is dynamic, it changes by the month and what may have worked two years ago might not work now. It’s important to continue to learn all of the time, not just the new technical advances but how to incorporate them and use them to improve your search engine ranking. By all means contact me for further information and look through our articles for hints tips and much more.
